Labor Lights Fire Under Govt Asset Sales

The NSW Labor Party, which has already distributed thousands of bumper stickers with the slogan "See NSW before Greiner sells it", has stepped up its campaign against the disposal of public assets.
The party will spend more than $100,000 over the next few days on newspaper advertisements criticising the sale of such properties as the Sydney Showground, the Prince Henry Hospital site, Strickland House, in Vaucluse, and a number of schools.
The first ads, which appeared yesterday, had the banner, "The Greiner-Murray Firesale - They belong to you, but like it or lump it, they are going". Other, similar advertisements are due to appear soon in daily newspapers.
The Premier reacted angrily to the campaign, which he described as a "cheap political stunt, except that in this case it is not very cheap".
"There is no firesale of public assets at all," Mr Greiner said.
"Every dollar that comes from the disposal of an asset goes into buying a new asset. All it is is moving schools to where the kids are, moving hospitals to where the sick people are."
The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Carr, said there was widespread opposition in the community to the Government's $900 million-a-year asset disposal program.
He defended the ALP's record on asset sales, saying that in the last year of the Unsworth Government only about $250 million had been raised from the disposal of surplus properties.
